Making it count on the Capricorn Coast
Sunday 2 August 2009, Broc Greenhalgh
Justin Maker who finished runner up in the Rockhampton Pro Am last weekend, has gone one better at Capricorn Resort today, firing a four under par total of 18 under par to take out the 2009 Pat O’Driscoll Real Estate / Tropical Auto Group Golf Classic.

The Capricorn Resort is a 36 hole venue in Yeppoon and is made up of the Resort Course and the Championship Course, and has been host to this great tournament for the last 18 years. Previous winners of this event include Terry Price, Scott Strange, Andrew Bonhomme and Peter Senior, making it one of the largest and strongest events in the country. This is confirmed by the tournament winning an award at the Queensland Golf Industry Awards, six out of the last seven years.

Round one saw Andrew Martin get off to a hot start, firing a bogey free round of 65, to be two ahead of fellow Victorians David Diaz and Adam Porker who both shot 67. A large pack of 46 players, were on even par or better after the first round, including Peter Senior(70), Ryan Haller(70), Michael Wright(69) and Jarrod Moseley(70).

Round two started with a celebration of Australian golfing icon Peter Senior’s 50th Birthday. With a large crowd there to sing happy birthday to him and present him with a cake, Senior used it as motivation to not only make birdie on the first hole, but to shoot a great round of 66 and move to the top of the leaderboard heading to the weekend. “I love this place. The golf courses are great and the area itself is hard to beat, not to mention the friends I get to catch up with each year” mentioned Senior. Joining him at eight under par after the opening two rounds was overnight leader Andrew Martin and New Zealander Michael Hendry who both are looking for their first QLD Sunshine Tour victories “It would be nice to get the first win on the board at one of the biggest events of the year, but I am really just going to try and relax and take it one shot at a time” said Martin.

The leaders played the Resort Course in round three and the glorious conditions that had greeted the players all week on the Capricorn Coast, continued on the weekend, and it was to the delight of local Justin Maker. Maker not only hails from nearby Gracemere, he was also the last professional to gain a start into the field, when a spot become available on Thursday morning. He started the third round two shots behind the leaders but when he made birdies on the 4th and 7th, as well as an eagle on the par five 9th on the Resort Course, Maker found himself alone on top of the leaderboard. Senior, Hendry and Martin failed to get anything going throughout the third round though Maker continued his hot form finishing with five birdies in the final six holes to finish with an eight under par round of 64, and the outright lead at 14 under par. Stuart Bouvier and Anthony Brown were others who jumped out of the pack in the third round, Bouvier shooting 66 to get to 11 under par for the tournament, while Victorian Anthony Brown shot 67 to be one behind Bouvier both leapfrogging the overnight leaders. Hendry and Senior were the best of the round two leaders shooting 71 and five shots behind Maker, while Martin was a shot further back, setting up a blockbuster finish.

The windy conditions in the final round, didn’t keep the crowd away with the famous hill and marquee surrounding the 18th green, packed with people as they watched the professionals complete their final rounds. Talking with major sponsor Pat O’Driscoll as the final groups finished, he said “I look around and it is hard to believe what we have created here. I have been associated with this tournament for the last 14 years and we have built a legacy that we are all very proud of.”

Maker started the final round very shaky with a double bogey on the opening hole though after making birdies on 6 and 8 his round was steadied and turned for the back nine on Sunday even par. Maker was three shots ahead of Anthony Brown who made birdies on the 7th and 8th to be two under par for the day through nine holes. Then came the ‘Peter Senior Show’. After turning one underunder par for the day, Senior made birdies on the 12th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th to shoot a final round 66 and post a 15 under par tournament total.

To his credit though the 27 year old Maker stuck to his guns, and like he had all week, played the back nine like the champion he was about to become. With birdies on the 10th, 14th, 15th 16th and 17th he not only blew the field away, he could walk play down the last knowing the championship was his. Although a three putt bogey was not how he might have imagined he would finish, but when he putted out for a four round total of 18 under par, the crowd was happy to have a local winner for the second year in a row.

“I really enjoyed the back nine today and now I understand how they feel when people say, it all happens on the back nine on Sunday. This one is for my Grandfather who passed away late last year. I almost lost my father a few months later and we decided that I would give this game one last crack, I am glad I did” said Justin

After his victory, Justin not only takes home $18,000, he also receives an exemption into every pro am in the country, an exemption he has come all so close to capturing over the last couple of weeks.

The QLD Sunshine Tour now heads to the $15,000 Bargara Pro Am on Tuesday before the $50,000 Fraser Coast Classic starting on Thursday.
